Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes two cap families that show up on Washington chimneys: the standard single-flue caps (models like the GC-1 line) and the custom multi-flue caps that get fabricated for older brick chimneys with two or three flues running side by side. If you have a single round or square clay flue tile, you’re almost certainly dealing with a stock unit. If you’ve got two flues sharing one crown, it’s a custom-size cap, and we measure that on-site before ordering.

The compatibility gotcha with Gelco caps is the mounting style. Most Gelco single-flue caps are friction-fit over the outside of the flue tile, and they’re sized in half-inch increments: 8″ x 8″, 8″ x 13″, 13″ x 13″, 13″ x 18″, and so on. The outside dimensions of the flue tile are what matter, not the inside. We’ve seen plenty of Washington homeowners order a cap based on the inside measurement and end up with a unit that won’t seat. If your flue tile has spalled or lost a corner, the friction fit won’t hold, and you need a crown repair or a leg-mounted cap instead.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust staining down the chimney face or across the crown. The 24-gauge stainless on older Gelco caps eventually pits and oxidizes, especially within a few blocks of the Anacostia or Potomac where salt air and humidity accelerate it. Rust marks mean the cap is shedding and the mounting hardware is likely not far behind.
• Water in the firebox after heavy rain. A failed cap lets rain fall straight down the flue. In Washington’s summer thunderstorm pattern, that’s often enough water overnight to leave a damp patch in the firebox by morning. This is the symptom that gets people calling us.
• Visible gaps or a lifted edge where the cap seats on the flue tile. Gelco friction-fit caps depend on a clean, square tile. If frost heave or age has spalled the tile corner, the cap sits crooked, and rain and wind both get in.
• Birds or squirrels you can hear, or nesting material in the flue. A cap with torn or missing mesh is an open-door invitation. Starlings are persistent in DC, and they’ll nest in a flue in a matter of days once the screen is breached.
• The cap is simply gone. Derecho-force winds have pulled more than one Gelco cap clean off a rowhouse. If you saw it in the yard or the roof and the flue is bare, that’s an emergency-level fix, not a spring project.
