DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Washington Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps across Washington, DC, with most replacements running between $385 and $760 installed, depending on the cap size, mounting surface, and whether the flue needs a custom chase cover. Same-week scheduling is standard during the spring and fall; we don’t promise same-day because a proper cap installation involves a quick flue inspection first.

Most owners discover their DuraFlex cap has failed the same way: water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace, a rust streak down the exterior brick, or a cap lying in the yard after a March windstorm. Sometimes it’s simpler than that: a bird in the firebox, or a draft smell that wasn’t there last winter. The cap is the first line of defense for your DuraFlex liner, and when it fails, water and animals get a straight shot into the flue.

Level Two Chimney Washington is an independent service provider; we are not affiliated with or endorsed by DuraFlex. We source genuine DuraFlex parts and matching aftermarket equivalents because we want the cap to fit the liner the first time, not after three trips to the supply house.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes two cap families that show up in Washington rowhouses and older homes: the standard round cap for single-wall flex liners, and the high-wind cap for exposed flues on flat roofs and rooftop terraces. The round cap covers liner diameters from 5.5 inches to 8 inches; the high-wind version is available in the same range but uses a longer collar that seats deeper into the liner. If your liner was installed as part of a reline in the last fifteen years, it’s almost certainly a 6-inch or 6.5-inch DuraFlex liner, but the only way to know for sure is to measure the inside diameter at the top, not the outside.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that catches Washington owners every year: a DuraFlex cap for a 6-inch liner will not seat correctly on a 5.5-inch liner, even though the difference is only half an inch. The collar sits loose, water gets behind it, and the cap rattles in a wind. We measure every liner before we order or pull a cap off the truck.

The OEM versus aftermarket decision for DuraFlex is straightforward. Genuine DuraFlex caps cost 20 to 30 percent more than quality aftermarket equivalents, and for a standard round cap on a standard liner, we’ll tell you honestly that a Copperfield or Olympia aftermarket cap will serve just as well. Where we insist on genuine DuraFlex is when the flue is oversized or the crown is irregular: that’s where the deeper collar and the exact tolerances actually matter.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. This is the most common symptom in Washington row houses, where chimneys share party walls and water intrusion shows up on interior plaster before it shows up anywhere else. If the cap collar is cracked or the cap is missing entirely, rain follows the liner down into the smoke chamber and wicks into the surrounding masonry.
  • Rust streaks on the exterior brick or chimney chase. A failing cap doesn’t always fall off; sometimes it rusts through at the weld points and lets water run down the flue from inside. If you see orange-brown staining on the chimney exterior, the cap has been compromised for at least one season.
  • A cap lying in the yard or on the roof after a storm. Washington gets its share of nor’easters and summer microbursts. A cap that comes off in high wind was either not screwed into the crown properly or was sized wrong for the liner to begin with.
  • Bird or animal activity in the firebox. A missing or loose cap is an open door. Birds, squirrels, and in Washington a surprising number of raccoons will make a home in an uncapped flue. If you hear scratching in the chimney or find nesting material in the firebox, the cap is gone or badly compromised.
  • A stronger-than-normal draft smell, especially in summer. When the cap fails, the flue doesn’t draw the way it should. Warm air from the house rises into the flue and pulls creosote odor back down into the living space on hot days. It’s not dangerous by itself, but it’s a sign the flue is not protected.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Washington, a DuraFlex-compatible chimney cap replacement with installation runs between $385 and $760. The lower end covers a standard 6-inch round cap on a flat concrete crown with good access. The higher end covers a high-wind cap on a four-story rowhouse, an irregular crown that needs a custom mounting bracket, or a chase cover replacement because the old cap rusted out the chase itself.

Work Typical Washington Price
Standard 6″ round cap, installed $385 – $485
High-wind cap, installed $520 – $680
Custom chase cover + cap, installed $650 – $760
Crown patching before cap install (when needed) Add $75 – $140

Every cap we install in Washington gets the same treatment: a written price before work starts, a camera scan of the upper flue while the old cap is off, and a photo record of the new cap seated and screwed into the crown. The written price includes the cap, the hardware, the install, and the cleanup. Our work on this part is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap fails or comes loose within a year, we make it right. That’s Clause 3 of the Haven Standard, in writing, on the job ticket.

DIY or Call Us?

This is not a high-tension part like a garage door spring, but it is a roof-access job on a four-story Washington rowhouse in most cases, and that’s where the real risk lives. If you have a one-story bungalow, an extension ladder, and a flat roof, you can absolutely swap a round DuraFlex cap yourself: measure the inside diameter of the liner, buy the cap, screw it into the crown with stainless hardware, done.

Where DIY goes wrong in Washington is the multi-story rowhouse with a sloped roof, a party-wall chimney, and a crown that’s been spalling for fifteen years. The crown is crumbling, the old cap is rusted onto the liner, and the roof access is a 40-foot ladder over an alley. That job is not worth a fall. We’re on those roofs every week, and we bring the right cap, the right hardware, and a camera so you can see the seating before we come down.

If you’re unsure which side of that line you’re on, call us at (240) 621-1264. We’ll ask about your chimney’s height, the liner size, and whether the old cap is still in place, and we’ll give you a straight answer about whether it’s safe to do yourself, along with a written price if you’d rather us do it.
